Leaves starting to turn color, the temperatures slowly starting to turn cool, and a monumental leap forward in human technology. Fall is here!
So why do you come to this blog? It’s probably because you’re a regular dude sipping beer watching your favorite football team break your heart. Perhaps your the regular “dudette” who is annoyed how your significant other is becoming depressed about watching a bunch of people wearing a color they like tossing a ball around on TV – and apparently they don’t toss the ball around as well as they had hoped.
The reason you come here is because you want hope – and you have no idea what is happening in science. Science isn’t sexy – but that’s what I’m here for – making science sexy. Speaking of which….
Robots convincing us their real, thanks NVIDIA
I mean let’s be honest.. sometimes when you call a call center you would actually think some of the supposed “humans” on the end are actually robots. It’s honestly disappointing to humanity when you realize – wow that was a real life human being.
Although my phone call centers don’t seem like this..
“…not only increased the close rate on computer-generated telephone sales by something like 3X, but one of the callers’ monitored responses indicated he was so convinced the system was a person that he to tried to flirt with it.”
can robots join the #MeToo movement?
Aging Reversed for the first time.
Yep. Just read that title again while I wait. Okay, you have a lot of questions – let me add some fuel to the fire… and then throw a bunch of water on it at the same time. First: this study used a particular way to define aging. Essentially as you age your DNA is deterioated by the environment and time itself. This study showed a reversal of that DNA backward in time. However, there is not one single cause of aging. Scientist have defined these 9 causes – and there may be more. So is reversing one of these 9 a giant leap forward? Well – It shows we can potentially start pushing the clock back – but we don’t know what roadblocks lie ahead in all causes.
“I’d expected to see slowing down of the clock, but not a reversal,” researcher Steve Horvath from the University of California, Los Angeles told Nature, which first reported the findings. “That felt kind of futuristic.
Starting to figure out any mechanism to reverse aging is still huge – but realistically we’d need more ability to crunch data and find patterns. If only there was some new technology on the horizon….
Google Hits Quantum Supremacy (Source: MIT)
You know when MIT is reporting news you did something big. More than likely you are thinking “Isn’t quantum just some funny thing Sheldon talk about on Big Bang Theory?”. For the first time – humans are learning how to use the physics at the quantum level for progress. Here is a great breakdown of Quantum Computing
“…reports that they saw a Google publication claiming that the company’s quantum processor can perform a calculation “in three minutes and 20 seconds that would take today’s most advanced classical computer, known as Summit, approximately 10,000 years”—a demonstration of quantum supremacy. Google has not yet responded to a Gizmodo request for comment, and it has long been cagey about when and how it’d make the announcement.” Source
The main takeaways: every single “qubit” added to a quantum computer doubles the amount of calculations a QC can do instantaneously. The implications are mind boggling – computing capability that could simulate our entire genomic reactions in hours. Because each bit doubles the amount of calculations – it’s conceivable that in 10 years time we could have computing power thousands if not millions of times more powerful as we do today.
That’s right.. angry birds and words with friends are about to get AMAZING.
